Two Regina men have been charged in connection with an incident on Monday that resulted in three local elementary schools enacting their “secure the building” protocols.

A 24-year-old is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon (firearm) and breach of recognizance. He made his first court appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court Tuesday.

A 22-year-old is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon (machete) and carrying a concealed weapon (knife). He was released on an undertaking to appear in provincial court on Oct. 26.

At approximately 2:36 p.m. on Monday, police were called to a residence in the 300 block of Rose Street. The homeowner had come home to find two unknown males in the house; one was holding a machete, the other was holding a firearm. The males fled the house, running westbound. Police were able to apprehend the male with the edged weapon but could not locate the male carrying the firearm.

Three elementary schools in the area were placed in “secure the building” as a precaution and school boards were advised of the situation. Initially, parents and other caregivers were asked not to come to the schools, but shortly before 3:30 p.m., with several patrol members in the area and police officers at the schools, the “secure the building” protocol was lifted. It was felt an orderly dismissal could occur with police officers present in the area and at the schools.

The second suspect was identified and arrested without incident at about 6:20 a.m. Tuesday.
